Competition heats up this weekend with intense battles shaping up as racers compete for the 2014 Division 1 championship July 18 – 20 at New England Dragway. Highlight this year’s event is the spectacular Night of Fire on Saturday, July 19. The best Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Cars in the country converge on Epping’s pristine quarter mile to walk away with the coveted “Wally” and important championship points.
“Last weekend we had several teams show up and test as they prepare for this weekend,” said New England Dragway General Manager Joe Lombardo. “Jackie Fricke and John Finke put down some pretty impressive runs in their nitro cars, gaining critical tuning data in the process. Both drivers ran better than 260 miles per hour. They feel with the right weather conditions race fans will see some new track records set in both elapsed time and mile per hour,” added Lombardo.
In addition to the dragsters the outlook for funny car is equally impressive. “These drivers know New England fans love funny cars. They pull out all the stops and put on a show that harkens back to the heyday of funny car racing at New England Dragway,” said Lombardo. Topping the list of entries is New England’s own Jay Blake and his Follow a Dream team. Todd Veney is poised to capture the funny car championship with a strong outing this weekend.
In addition to the highly competitive alcohol classes will be the return of nostalgia nitro funny cars piloted by “Crazy Jake” Crimmons and Mike Smith at the controls of the “Hard Guys” machine. “Fans love nitro and these guys put on one of the best shows in drag racing,” states Lombardo.
Along with the nitro gang will be jet dragsters. Making her debut in the all new “Queen of Diamonds” machine is Jill Canuso. She thunders into town with her radically designed machine that is raising the bar in jet competition thanks to consistent runs at 300-plus miles per hour.
The Night of Fire gets underway Saturday at 5 PM. Along with the professional categories race fans will get a full dose of quarter mile excitement courtesy of Top Dragster, Top Sportsman and Pro Stock Snowmobile.
